Vietnam has more recently become a favourite with travellers. Once, the name Vietnam signified not so much a country, but instead, a tragic jungle war. In recent years, however, the lifting of Vietnamese government restrictions and the room in budget travelling, has enabled more contemporary and relevant portraits of the country to gain currency in the West.

An understanding of history still goes a long way in Vietnam, since the country has a unique civilization and a highly cultured people, but most visitors are entranced by it's landscapes, its delicious cuisine and the opportunity to witness the invigorating, early days of Vietnam's renewed contact with the West.

Bordering Cambodia, Laos and China the country stretches over 1,600 km along the eastern coast of the Indo-Chinese Peninsula. The country's two main cultivated areas are the Red River Delta (15,000 square kms) in the north and the Mekong Delta (60,000 square kms) in the south. Three-quarters of the country is mountainous and hilly; the highest peak is the 3,143-meter-high Fansipan in northwest Vietnam.

As well as fine weather, there is spectacular natural scenery and historic sites. Vietnam's greatest resource is its friendly, welcoming people. Long closed to the outside world, Vietnam retains a charming innocence that most tourist regions lack. Yet in the decade since the country opened its doors to visitors. the country has built world-class hotels and tourism facilities. with international standards and traditional Vietnamese hospitality. Vietnam is ready to take you on an unforgettable adventure.

Located in both a tropical and a temperate zone. It is characterized by strong monsoon influences, but has a considerable amount of sun, a high rate of rainfall, and high humidity. Regions located near the tropics and in the mountainous regions are endowed with a temperate climate. The annual average temperature ranges from 22ºC to 27ºC. In Hanoi, the average temperature is 23ºC, in Ho Chi Minh City it is 26ºC, and in Hue it is 25ºC.

There are two distinguishable seasons. The cold season occurs from November to April and the hot season from May to October. The difference in temperature between the two seasons in southern is almost unnoticeable, averaging 3ºC. The most noticeable variations are found in the northern provinces where differences of 12ºC have been observed. There are essentially four distinct seasons, which are most evident in the northern provinces.
